We all share responsibility for the safety and well-being of children in British Columbia. Child welfare workers have the lead responsibility for responding to suspected child abuse or neglect in cases where the parent is unwilling or unable to protect the child from harm.
Children may also be harmed outside the home – where the parent is not present and cannot reasonably be expected to protect the child. In these cases, service providers such as police, school personnel, health care practitioners or child care providers may have a primary role in helping to ensure the child’s safety and well-being.
